[TIPS] Using classic lenses on a Nikon Z camera

Rayqual LM-NZ adapter with its light shielding plate

One Z body, a whole shelf of old lenses

Nikon's Z mount has a short flange distance, so almost any classic SLR or rangefinder lens can sit in front of it with the right adapter. Rayqual makes Z-mount adapters in Japan for Leica M, Leica R, L39, Nikon F, Nikon S / Contax C (outer claw), Contax/Yashica, Canon FD, Minolta MD (SR / MC), Olympus OM, Pentax K, Konica AR, Exakta / Topcon, Deckel and M42 lenses.

What is inside a Rayqual Z adapter

  • A light shielding plate is installed as an internal-reflection measure. It also hides the camera's electronic contacts behind the lens.
  • Each adapter is made for one lens mount, and we recommend an individual adapter for every lens you own, so you can swap lenses as quickly as native ones.

Check these points before you order

  1. NF-NZ (Nikon F): not compatible with G-type and E-type lenses that have no aperture ring. The Nikkor-O 21 mm F4 cannot be attached because its rear section is long, and very early lenses marked in cm (such as the Nikkor-S Auto 5 cm with the deep "hakama" aperture skirt) cannot be attached either.
  2. PK-NZ (Pentax K): not compatible with DA-type lenses without an aperture ring.
  3. LM-NZ (Leica M): the Super-Angulon 21 mm F3.4 and 21 mm F4 cannot be attached, because the rear protrusion interferes with the light shielding plate. Use retractable lenses without retracting them.
  4. SC-NZ .O (Nikon S / Contax C): this adapter is for outer-claw lenses only; inner-claw standard lenses do not fit. A compatibility list (PDF) is linked on the collection page.
  5. MD-NZ (Minolta MD): also compatible with SR and MC lenses.

Every adapter in the collection is 100% made in Japan by Rayqual, Tokyo. An instruction manual for mirrorless mount adapters (PDF) is linked from each product page, and sample photos taken on Z bodies are on our Nikon Z example page.
